What a cute bag, it would also make a lovely present. I love the Nautical theme, so summery. I think I will have to give this a go.

Ribbon to wrap around your home made Sea Salt Fudge - winners are.
Made another batch yesterday, it is getting addictive!

Rhonda
Oooo, I love fudge.  I'm going to have to try this.  Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Ardilla
Hi!
Yummy..... Thanks for the recipe!
I would use any of the ribbons, they are awesome! I like the lighthouse one, the anchor with the ring, the sea shells... I can´t believe how cute they are!
Thanks for the chance...
Ardilla Smile

WendY
Oooh - how I love fudge.   I will definitely give this a try.   I would use nautical boat or sea shells ribbon but I don't think the fudge would stay wrapped for long.   WendY

Your own message in a bottle winners are

Alyson
My message would be "Keep Calm & Eat Chocolate" - this message is a cure all for so many things!  Such a cute idea!

If I was stuck on a desert island I'd love to find a bottle with this message - along with some chocolate, of course!

Marjorie
This is It is a wonderful idea, Syd is such an inspiration just like you Ali. I love nautical stuff too.
I enjoyed reading the other girls comments. I think mine would  have to be for my wonderful hubby Jim, to tell him 'You are my World'. He has looked after me when I was hurt, even though he is ill himself. He is so patient in sufering, never complains. (unlike me). Hugs x x

Alison
This is such a lovely idea, weddings, births etc. I would love Ecclesiastes 3 v 1-8, A time for everything, but it is too long.  However, my niece is 18 on the 21st June, "Happy 18th Birthday" would therefore be my choice and would make a very unique present.

I love this pictureSmile

Finally the collection of Nautical ribbons go to.......

Sharon
All i can say is OMG what a wonderful idea x

Nautical week - sailing away

07/06/2013

Morning everyone.
How could we have nautical week without a boat!
How could we have a themed ribbon week without a cake!

What do you think?
I probably shouldn't say this - but I am sooooo pleased with my cake.
I have never fondant iced a cake before, never made a paper boat and never made ribbon sails!

If I can do it, so can you.

The cake is a Victoria sponge filled with strawberry jam (Tony's favourite).
I covered the outside of the cake also with the jam, (Tony is not keen on butter icing).
I gather the jam helps the fondant icing to stick to the cake.

I rolled out the fondant icing, laid it on top of the cake and smoothed it down with my hands.

The paper boat is a A4 piece of paper, same colour both sides.
I followed the instructions on WikiHow here
My first boat was rubbish!!
But I soon got the hang of it, and even Syd and Sam were able to make them.
We have so many paper boats now in the warehouse!!!

I used a hole punch to make the hole to insert the mast,
which is a long paper stick (left over from my ribbon tulips here)

Now the ribbon bit.............SAILS

  • 4 x 28cm lengths of 25mm blue stripe ribbon here
  • 1  x 14cm of Nautical ribbon here
  • long paper stick
  • white machine thread

1. Sew the nautical ribbon to one of the pieces of the navy stripe sail ribbon in the centre.

2. Lay the ribbons on the work surface so you know how to sew the sail together.

3. Sew the edges of the flag.

$.  Open the ribbons out and flatten with your fingers to create the flag.

5.  Change your machine foot to the zipper foot.  Insert the mast between the navy stripe ribbon layers

Machine the ribbon as close to the mast as you can.

6. Insert the next sail ribbon and continue machining.

7. Repeat until all 4 pieces of ribbons are sewn to the mast.

8. Remove the paper mast stick and zig zag the lengths of ribbon together.
Make sure you do not machine in the mast channel.

9. Sewn sail.  I did not not iron mine as I wanted a wind swept look!

10. Cut away the excess ribbon, do not worry if the ends fray - all part of the look.

11. Insert the paper mast stick.

Now all you have to do is add the mast to the boat.

The kiddies all wanted the boat and Uncle T wanted the cake!!!!

Over the past week you have seen my ideas and those of our Design Team, BUT.....
.....what would you make if you had some of this nautical ribbon collection?
Do tell us in a comment and we will pick a winner on Tuesday

Remember to refresh your screen after leaving a comment,
to ensure it has not been eaten. Any problems email it to us craftyribbons@gmail.com

That's it, no more nautical ideas this week, shame I did enjoy going to the beach - for research I promise!
I must of had ribbons on the brain, Condor came out of Poole harbour, I turned to Tony and said
"Look Craftyribbons ferry has ribbons on it"

Nautical week - message in a?

06/06/2013

Let me tell you a little story about todays idea.....

Sydney and I were talking and she tells me that her daddy is going to be away in Australia for Fathers Day.
So I suggested we made a card and put it in his suitcase.  No, she was not keen on that, so we chatted about
other ways of sending messages and she came up with a message in a bottle!
Hence our ribbon message in a bottle.

....and pull, pull a little more............

......or what!

Sydney was so pleased with her message for Daddy....not sure she will be able to part with it!

Just goes to show that inspiration is all around us.

I have a delivery of these tiny glass bottles due tomorrow.
Well, they are so sweet - I am going to have to do something like this for the website.
Watch this space or should that be bottle!!!

What would your message in a bottle be?
I will make a bottle just for you, leave us a comment and I will pick 3 winners on Tuesday

Remember to refresh your screen after leaving a comment,
to ensure it has not been eaten. Any problems email it to us craftyribbons@gmail.com

I have a day off - going shopping with the girls.

Nautical week - sea salt fudge

04/06/2013

I hope you do not think this is a cop out.  White baking parchment wrapped with ribbon.
The contents are awesome!
Everyone would love a parcel like this.

Firstly let me explain, I have never made fudge before, but Bev and I have been on rather a fudge kick of late.
Most Monday mornings we share our fudge bounty from our weekend trips.
While in Dartmouth, I found some sea salt fudge and it was to die for.  Very expensive and did not last very long!
Bev had a brain wave and said "Make some Ali".

Ooh er missus, so I gave it a whirl. I almost wished I hadn't this fudge is so good we cannot stop eating it!
I came home from work yesterday and made a second batch.

I am not a cook, so would not dream of a tutorial but here are the details of the fudge.

  • Nautical Ribbon
  • White baking paper
  • 397g can of condensed milk
  • 150ml Milk
  • 450g Demerara sugar
  • 115g Butter
  • 1½ tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract

1. Grease and line a 20cm baking tin.

2.  Place the sugar, milk, butter and condensed milk into a large heavy-based sauce pan.
Stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Over a low heat bring to the boil, stirring all the time and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
Stir continuously during this time, making sure you scrape across the bottom of the pan.

Test the fudge by dropping a small amount into cold water.  If it forms a ball it is set.

3.  Take off the heat and stir in 1 tsp of sea salt and 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

4.  Allow to cool for about 5mins.

5.  This stage is the hard bit!  Beat the fudge mixture until it becomes thick and grainy.
You can feel the difference in the texture as you beat.

6.  Pour into the prepared baking tin.

7.  Sprinkle over ½ tsp of sea salt and slightly press into the fudge with the back of a spoon.

8.  Leave to cool and set. (Although it is very nice warm as well!)

9.  Cut into squares or oblongs, wrap in baking paper and wrap with ribbon.

I made another batch of this fudge last night, and it was not a fluke.
It tasted just as good as the first batch!

Which ribbon would you wrap your fudge up with?
Do tell by leaving us a comment and we may send you some!

We will pick  THREE winners next Tuesday.

Remember to refresh your screen after leaving a comment,
to ensure it has not been eaten. Any problems email it to us craftyribbons@gmail.com

ummmmmm..........can I get away with keeping all this fudge to myself.
Nope - it's made for sharing

Nautical week - beach hut bag

03/06/2013

Morning and welcome to Nautical week, another themed week to get your ribbon inspiration bursting.

On a stroll along the prom a while back, while taking photos of beach huts, I got thinking.
They come in such fab colours, ooooh they look a little bit like ribbon - the wooden slats I mean.
So I had a play..................

This NEW Nautical ribbon was just what I needed for my beach hut - yes the beach hut is made of ribbon.
It's a form of free style machine embroidery......BUT......I did not have the correct foot for my machine,
so I did it "Ali" style!

I used a sewing machine, if you have the time you can also hand embroider this beach hut.

  • Red stripe Nautical Ribbon
  • Navy stripe Nautical Ribbon
  • Nautical Boat ribbon
  • White ric rac
  • Double sided bondaweb
  • Black machine thread
  • Small red button
  • Iron
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • A towel or something to sew the beach hut to.

1. Not tea towels today but two hand towels from Wilkinsons.
Perfect colour match to the ribbons.

2.  Cut 5 lengths of red ribbon about 12-14cms long.  Slighly wider than the beach hut.
Cut a piece of bondaweb also slightly bigger than the beach hut.  There are two sides to bondaweb.
On side is rough and the other smooth like paper, the rough side becomes sticky when heated.

3.  With the rough side facing upwards, iron on the first piece of ribbon. DO NOT allow the iron to touch the bond a web,
it will make an aweful mess of your iron!
Slightly overlap the second piece of ribbon and iron in place.

4. Cover the sheet of bondaweb with ribbon.

5. Turn it over and give it a really good iron, this will make sure it sticks well.

6. Print or copy our beach hut template onto card and cut out.
You are welcome to pass this template on to others, but we ask you to link back to us.

7. Place the template onto the sheet of ribbon and draw round it.
Cut the beach hut out and carefully remove the paper backing.

8. Repeat steps 2-7 with 3 lengths of blue ribbon for the door.

9.  Iron (place the iron onto the shape, lift and place down again, rather then moving the iron over the beach hut)
the red beach hut shape onto your towel, and then iron the door in place.
Put a piece of cloth over the design and and give it a really good iron. - DO NOT steam

Cut two lengths of boat ribbon for the roof.  Iron bondaweb to the back of both.
Iron both onto the top of the beach hut as a roof.

10. For machine embroidery you should drop the machines dog feed and use a special darning foot,
but as I did not have one, I used a normal foot, with dog teeth engaged and set the machine onto slow speed.
Thread the machine and bobbin with black thread.

Machine all the way round the beach hut, you do not want the stitching to look too neat, so if needs be "wiggle"
the stitching to create the effect of machine embroidery.

11. Machine around again so you have two lines of sewing, making sure they are not always on top of each other.

12.  Once the outline has been machined, machine across the beach hut where the ribbons slighty overlap.
This will create more definition to the beach hut planking.

I added three strips of white ric rac to the base of my design, a few waves by the beach hut!
Once again machine two lines.
Hand sew the button in place - I decided againest the porthole in the door.

13. To make the bag - fold down the top edge of the towel and machine.
This is the channel that your ribbon drawstring will pass through.

Repeat on the other side.

14. Fold the towel with the wrong sides facing and machine the sides.
(Seam is on the outside of the bag)

15. Thread the navy ribbon through the ribbon channels at the top of the bag, all the way round.

16. Thread the red ribbon through the channels, starting from the opposite side to the start of the navy.

17. Tie a knot in the ends of the ribbon and trim.

Ready for you to fill and enjoy!

Phew!  That was a long tutorial, hope I did not lose you on the way, because we do have FREEBIES.
(For those of you still waiting for your bunting FREEBIES they are leaving this week.
